He had a tendency to criticize people who were venerated, because, of course, he felt (rightly) that he was all-too-often overlooked when it came to popular applause. Thus, also, his slander of Th. Mann as the "Gross-schriftsteller" (which I rather unliterally translate as Big-shot writer). I just found this reflection while doing some research for my glossary for Theater Symptoms (a translation of Musil's plays and writings on theater), wherein I am glad to say that he actually (finally!) has some more respectful things to say about Kraus's wit, his journalistic force, his intelligence, albeit in a review where he criticizes his literary works.
